Economic impact of biofuels

The World Bank reports that biofuel industries employ about 100 times more workers per unit of energy produced than the fossil fuel industry. The ethanol industry is credited with providing more than 200,000 direct jobs in the United States and 500,000 direct jobs in Brazil.

A study from the University of Tennessee found that producing 25% of the US's energy from agricultural resources would generate in excess of $700 billion annually in economic activity, create 5.1 million jobs, and add $180 billion to net farm income by 2025.

In the developing world, if farmers are able to direct their crops toward biofuel production, there is real potential for substantial development to occur, providing benefits for some of the poorest people on earth while at the same time reducing emissions. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has studied this in detail in its report "Challenges and opportunities for developing countries in producing biofuels".

  • Of the world’s 47 poorest countries, 38 are net oil importers, and 25 of these import all of their oil. Yet many of these countries have substantial agricultural bases and are well-positioned to grow highly productive energy crops.
